Single-Phase AC-DC Power Converter With Integrated Power Decoupling Port For Low Frequency Pulsed Load

A single-phase AC-DC converter, which is composed of a dual-output power factor corrector (DO-PFC) and a Buck converter, is proposed for low-frequency pulse load applications. The low voltage output port of the DO-PFC is connected to the pulsed load, so the stable valley power of the pulsed load is directly supplied by the DO-PFC. The high voltage output port of the DO-PFC is used as the power decoupling port, and used as the input of the Buck converter. By allowing a wide voltage fluctuation range, the capacitance of electrolytic capacitors for pulsation power buffer can be reduced. The pulsed component of the load power is provided by the Buck converter. A quasi-single-stage power conversion from AC input to the pulsed load is achieved, which is benefit for efficiency improvement of the overall power system. The operation principles, parameter design method, control, and modulation strategies are analyzed in detail. An experimental prototype with 2-kW peak power is built and tested to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed solution.
