An Efficient Geometry-Based Approach for 3D Scattering Center Modeling

This paper presents a method for 3D scattering center (SC) modeling of complex targets based on their meshed geometric models. The proposed approach integrates geometric partitioning, classification, and SC parameter extraction into a unified framework, enabling automatic SC model construction. Unlike existing methods that rely on manually decomposing computer-aided design (CAD) models to isolate individual scattering sources, this method eliminates the need for manual intervention. Notably, it addresses the challenge of streamlined targets with smoothly connected structures, which are often inseparable by manual decomposition. Furthermore, the proposed method avoids the computationally intensive process of numerical electromagnetic simulations, significantly reducing the effort required for SC modeling. To validate the feasibility and accuracy of the method, Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) simulations generated using the constructed SC model were compared with results from full-wave numerical methods. The high correlation between the simulated and numerical results demonstrates the precision of the proposed approach in reproducing high-resolution radar images.
