Enhancing Electrical Power Distribution Network Resilience from Kite Disturbances

In regions with a tradition of kite flying, disturbances to electrical power distribution networks caused by kites present significant challenges. This research proposed a prototype kite detection system aimed at improving the resilience of electrical distribution networks by detecting kites near power distribution lines before they cause disruptions. The system utilizes the YOLOv8 object detection algorithm and LoRa connectivity for real-time transmission of detection data from the Node to the Gateway, achieving an average latency of 0.2896 seconds. An economic-based feasibility analysis is conducted, comparing the costs of implementing this resilience enhancement with the potential financial losses from kite disturbances in Nusa Penida. The result shows that the system can reduce Energy Not Served (ENS) and mitigate potential financial losses, offering an economically viable solution for deployment at critical points in the electrical power distribution network.
