Assessment of Power Generators Disturbance Response Compliancy to Grid Code Requirements

Dynamic performance analysis of generating units in power grids relies on evaluating command and disturbance responses. Command responses describe how a system reacts to deliberate setpoint variations, while disturbance responses assess the system's behavior under unexpected changes. Metrics like settling time, rise time, overshoot, and steady-state error are essential for quantifying system performance and these are present in most up-to-date grid connection requirements. However, applying settling time to disturbance responses presents challenges due to the absence of standardized criteria for the tolerance bandwidth. This paper proposes a rule-of thumb to help clarify and standardize the quantification of settling time due to disturbance response analysis. The methodology is applied on a detailed test case considering the requirements derived from an Australian grid code, which is quite detailed and demanding in this regard. Results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed approach in providing a consistent and generalizable criteria for disturbance response evaluations, contributing to a standardized approach for assessing the generating unit compliance with grid codes.
