Traditional methods for estimating system inertia rely on large disturbances, which provides limited and discrete estimates. As a result, ambient data-based approaches, which utilize small, naturally occurring frequency variations during normal operation, are gaining attention for inertia estimation. This paper explores a method to estimate regional inertia for the Eastern Interconnection (EI) of the USA from ambient Phasor Measurement Units(PMU) data with spectral analysis and statistical techniques. These methods enable real-time, regional inertia estimation, offering grid operators valuable, localized insights into system stability. The use of ambient data for regional inertia estimation is essential for enhancing grid resilience, ensuring better management of grid stability, and adapting to the evolving energy landscape.
