Dynamic power allocation control for a Hybrid Grid Booster

The continuous expansion of renewable energy sources requires in parallel upgrading the grid’s transmission capacity to be capable of integrating them. Transmission network operators must ensure the (N− 1) principle for the security of power supply which entails keeping part of the thermal capacity of a transmission line unused to act as a reserve capacity permanently. Grid Boosters (GBs), namely large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), aim to increase the utilization of power lines without violating the (N−1) standard, however, GBs lack the economic feasibility due to the high cost of BESSs. The literature proposed multi-use GBs and Hybrid Grid Boosters (HGBs) to overcome this obstacle. In this context, this paper presents modeling and primary control of an HGB consisting of BESS and a gas turbine plant. The proposed control design implements a modified dynamic power allocation of load-sharing control for the mentioned HGB.
