Integrating Digital Twins for Thermal Management of HVDC Cables in Curative System Operation

Curative system operation is a growing strategy in modern power systems intended to enhance grid flexibility. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables offer considerable potential for such operations by leveraging their inherent thermal reserves to accommodate higher loading during contingencies. Ensuring safety and reliability in this strategy necessitates precise, real-time monitoring and predictive capabilities. This paper proposes a digital twin environment that supports system operators in planning and leveraging these thermal reserves to extend the utilization time of curative measures, while enhancing operational and economic efficiency.
