A High Power Density Inverter Design For Traction Applications

The traction inverter is a crucial component in the electric vehicle, since its efficiency and power density impact the vehicle range and costs. This paper describes the design of a compact inverter for traction application in electric vehicle. Wide band gap power semiconductor (Silicon Carbide) based modules, direct liquid cooling, high temperature rated nanolam film capacitor technology collectively allow for a very compact design that allows for 66kW/l and 66kW/kg volumetric and gravimetric power densities, while reaching peak efficiency of 99.5%.
