Motor-Integrated Segmented Inverters

This paper presents the design, packaging, and integration of a novel segmented inverter integrated with a motor designed for commercial vehicles (CVs). The benefits of using segmented open-end windings in enabling higher AC voltage and thus the potential use of non-rare earth magnets, reconfigurable windings, ease of integration, reduced cost, and simplified thermal management are presented using an actual design of a 320 kWpeak integrated motor for a hybrid CV employing 105 °C engine coolant as the cooling media. The design and thermal analysis results are presented to show the simpler packaging and deep inverter integration with the motor delivering enhanced performance, fault tolerance, and serviceability, which are crucial requirements for CVs.
