Ambient Measurement-Based Inertia Estimation Using Singular Spectrum Analysis

Accurate estimation of inertia is essential for ensuring stability in modern power systems with significant renewable energy share. This paper proposes a novel method for estimating the inertia constant using ambient measurements of electrical power and frequency. The method combines advanced signal processing and system identification techniques to provide reliable and interpretable inertia estimates. A detailed validation is conducted on the IEEE 39-bus system under various operating conditions to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the approach. Furthermore, the proposed approach is validated on multiple scenarios, and the results highlight the potential of the proposed method for real-time inertia monitoring in low-inertia power systems.
