Comparison of Current-Limiting Strategies for Grid-Forming Converters Under Grid Faults

This paper investigates the performance of three state-of-the-art current-limiting strategies for grid-forming (GFM) converters under grid faults. These highly effective strategies include virtual admittance control, virtual admittance control enhanced with virtual power feedback, and the recently developed cross-forming control. The performance comparison addresses two crucial requirements for GFM converters under grid faults, namely transient stability and reactive current injection. The comparison indicates that the virtual admittance control enhanced with virtual power feedback shows the most promising transient stability performance, while the cross-forming control exhibits superior reactive current injection performance. Thus, individual benefits of each strategy can be obtained by properly combining them.
