Fault Tolerant Control Based on Sliding Mode for Heavy-Haul Trains Under the Phase of Acceleration

Heavy-haul trains have a large number of formations and high load, and compared to ordinary trains, they experience more complex forces. If it suffers from a fault, serious accidents such as hook jumping and derailment may occur. To solve this issue, a fault tolerant control method based on sliding mode for heavy-haul trains is proposed in this article. A fault estimation observer for heavy-haul trains is designed to estimate the typical faults effectively. By combining the fault estimation observer with a sliding mode controller, a fault tolerant controller is designed. The impact of faults on train operation is effectively reduced through this method. To verify the effectiveness of this method, a sliding mode control method without fault compensation is compared with the proposed method. The results show that the control effect of the proposed method is good, and the fluctuation of train operation curve caused by faults is relatively small.
