Design of a Planar Ultrawideband Modular Antenna With Resistance-loading and Metasurfaces

Ultra-wideband phased array antennas have a wide range of applications in communications, radar, detection and other fields. However, one or even more layers of thick dielectric boards are usually required to act as a wide-angle impedance matching (WAIM) layer, which will greatly increase the profile of Ultra-wideband antennas. In this paper, a resistance-loading layer and metasurface was designed to replace the normal WAIM layer in planar ultra-wideband modular antenna (PUMA), which greatly reduces the profile height while still ensuring wide-angle scanning. At the same time, the shorting vias are grounded to move the common-mode resonance out of the working frequency band to achieve ultra-wideband characteristics. A PUMA with the resistance-loading and metasurface achieves 4-18 GHz impedance bandwidth with scanning up to 60° in E/H plane. The profile height of the proposed PUMA is only 0.066λL.
