A Compact Low Noise 7bits Variable-Gain Phase Shifter Utilizing Distributed Attenuation Scheme with Minimum 0.34° Phase Error

This paper proposes a compact low noise 7bits Variable-Gain Phase Shifter (VGPS) in 65-nm CMOS process. Two Gain-boosting units based on cross-coupled transistors are induced to realize the improvement of the peak gain and bandwidth, so a 4dB peak gain, 11GHz 3dB bandwidth can be realized. The 16dB attenuation is distributed so that the core area is 0.21mm². The RMS amplitude/phase errors of 360° phase control is minimized to 0.98dB/0.34° by regulating the Insertion-Loss-Tunable (ILT) baluns. The input match network is redesigned to reduce the minimal NF to 5.1dB. The DC power consumption of the proposed VGPS is 24.16mW.
