A Wideband and Optically Transparent U-slot Microstrip Antenna Array for K-band Application

A wideband and optically transparent U-slot microstrip antenna array for K-band application is proposed in this paper. Metal-meshed structure and optically transparent substrate with low dielectric loss tangent is used to balance the radiation efficiency and optical transparency. The proposed antenna element has a simulated peak gain of 6.14 dBi at 23 GHz with a related 1-dB gain bandwidth of 26.7% (18.92-25.07 GHz). Moreover, the proposed 1×4 phased array exhibits beam scanning capability over-20° to 30° with a simulated peak gain of 11.6 dBi. The proposed design shows great potential in satellite communication and next-generation wireless networks.
