An Improved SBR-PO Hybrid Method Based on Region Division for Fast RCS Prediction

This letter proposes an improved shooting and bouncing ray (SBR) - physical optics (PO) hybrid method to improve the computational efficiency of radar cross section (RCS) from electrically large objects. The basic idea is to combine PO method to reduce the computation of ray tracing in SBR method. The proposed method divides the model into single and multiple scattering regions through two shadowing tests, and calculates the corresponding scattering fields using PO and SBR methods. The improved SBR-PO method can effectively accelerate the calculation of RCS for electrically large objects. Moreover, further acceleration of the proposed method is achieved using the graphics processing unit (GPU). The simulation results of several experiments indicate that the proposed method is an effective approach.
