Utilizing Biomedical Radar in Clinical Doppler Cardiographic Detection of Atrial Arrhythmias

This paper evaluates the use of biomedical radar for overnight clinical cardiographic monitoring of a patient with atrial arrhythmias. It discusses the radar system design and signal calibration methods for accurate submillimeter signal extraction. Experimental results indicate that the radar can effectively detect ventricular activity with a consistent pattern, while it may identify atrial mechanical activity with abnormal patterns. This ability allows for important metric derivation, e.g. the pre-ejection period and left ventricular ejection time. It also enables the measurement of heart rate variability (HRV), which closely correlates with electrocardiogram results (R2=0.9968).
