A Novel Low Profile Magnetoelectric Dipole Antenna With Resonant Ring

A novel low profile magnetoelectric (ME) dipole antenna is designed in this paper. The antenna is composed of two laminated dielectric plates, a pair of symmetrical metal patches, and an improved Γ-shaped feeder structure, in which two horizontal patches are used as double electric dipoles and two vertically shortened folded patches are used as equivalent double magnetic dipoles. Double magnetic dipoles and double electric dipoles are combined to realize a ME dipole antenna of dual complementary sources. To achieve a low-profile structure with broadband and wide-beam characteristics, a shunt-fed improvement is applied to the feeding structure, reducing the antenna height to 0.15λ₀. Additionally, dual resonant rings are introduced on the electric dipole patches, and the magnetic dipoles are folded to enhance both the impedance bandwidth and the half-power beamwidth (HPBW) of the antenna. The maximum HPBW reaches up to 135°. The design demonstrates a measured impedance bandwidth (with a return loss greater than 10 dB) ranging from 4.21 to 7.06 GHz, and a realized gain between 7.9 and 9.2 dBi. At the same time, the antenna exhibits a stable radiation pattern, consistent beamwidth, and low back lobe radiation within the operating frequency band.
