Design and Implementation of Analog Frequency Modulation Enabled Backscatter Communication System

In this paper, a novel continuous frequency modulation enabled backscatter communication system is proposed and evaluated, which constructs analog modulation by transducing the physical quantities to frequency shifts of the incident ratio frequency (RF) signal. Moreover, both continuous detector and discrete code book-based detector is constructed to reduce computational complexity. We design a synchronization-free backscatter circuit to verify the proposed structure. Compared to existing analog modulation method, the proposed scheme achieves 10 times throughput gain at a distance of 30 m with -μW level power consumption. Consequently, the proposed architecture is able to resist the changing channel environment, which has the potential to be applied in mobile vehicle communication.
