Integrated Dual-Band Microstrip Patch Antenna for Sub-6 GHz and mm-Wave 5G Communication

To integrate both Sub- 6 GHz and mm-Wave frequency bands, it is common to use two separate antenna patches. While there has been extensive research on achieving dualband operation using two distinct antennas, studies focusing on supporting both bands with a single antenna are relatively uncommon. The primary drawback of using separate antennas for dual-band operation is the increased space requirement. In contrast, a single antenna capable of operating in both bands can significantly reduce the overall footprint and cost. This work presents the design and simulation of a single microstrip patch antenna capable of operating in both sub- 6 GHz and millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) frequency bands, targeting 5G mobile communication systems. The proposed antenna supports operation in two widely used 5G NR bands-n78 (3.30-3.80 GHz) and n257 ($\mathbf{2 6. 5 - 2 9. 5 0} \mathbf{G H z}$). Designed for compactness and ease of fabrication, the antenna avoids complex circuitry and is suitable for integration into mobile terminals. Simulation results demonstrate resonant frequencies at 3.675 GHz and 28.029 GHz, with effective bandwidths of 60 MHz and 670 MHz, respectively. Radiation pattern analysis confirms stable directional performance in both bands. The antenna's compact size, dual-band functionality, and fabrication simplicity make it a promising candidate for next-generation 5 G -enabled devices.
