Targeting High Efficiency in Novel Bifacial MoTe2/ZnSe-Based Solar Cells: A Numerical Assessment for High Voc with N:Cu20 BSF Layer via Device Simulation

Molybdenum Telluride has gained attention as a potential absorber material for solar cells due to its high absorption across a broad range of wavelengths, a clean surface without dangling bonds, and tunable band gap. A solar cell design combining MoTe2/ZnSe with an N:cu2o back surface field (BSF) was modeled and assessed using SCAPS-1D. The thickness, doping profiles, and defect densities of the MoTe2 absorber and ZnSe window layers were systematically studied to find the best configuration. The initial device MoTe2/ZnSe showed a photovoltaic efficiency of 30.93% with Voc of 0.983V, Jsc of 43.19 mA/cm2, and FF of 87.44%. Introducing the N:cu2olayer minimized carrier recombination at the rear contact, which led to an increase in Voc to 0.984 V (from 0.925 V) and enhanced the overall efficiency to 36.67%. In both the presence and absence of the BSF layer, recombination and capacitance-voltage (C-V) investigations were performed in order to comprehend the fundamental process causing the enhancement of Voc. Also, the device's performance in bifacial mode was examined, and it was discovered that the bifacial solar cell works well for the suggested PVSC by increasing the PV performance from 36.67% to 43.42%. After all, the findings of the investigation showed that rise of built-in potential along with reduced carrier recombination at the junction between the absorber and BSF layer were main factors leading to the device's improved performance.
