IoT Based Aquaponics System for Simultaneous Soilless Agriculture and Fish Farming in Urban Settings

This study aims to utilize urban rooftop spaces and integrate Internet of Things (IoT) with aquaponics in order to facilitate symbiosis between soilless agriculture and fish farming. Vegetables such as mint, water spinach, spinach and dwarf copperleaf were grown in a soilless closed loop system using a 1000 liter container and PVC pipes as growth beds. Tilapia fish were used as aquaculture where the nutrient from fish excretement aided in growth of the vegetables. In total seven parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH and parameters were measured for the month of January 2025. A web user interface was used to monitor the parameters in real time to ensure optimal growth conditions to provide the scope of intervention when required. After a span of one month noticeable growth has been observed for all species, where highest growth of $\mathbf{3 1. 4 \%}$ was for spinach and least growth of 18.1 % for mint among vegetables and 19.4 % increase in growth among tilapia fish. This study is promising in contributing towards food security and availability by addressing the issue of decrease in agricultural land and holds promise to reduce reliance on food imports. Subsequently, it hold potential for reducing carbon footprint left by industrial scale agriculture.
