IoT-Enabled Intelligent Traffic Signals for Optimizing Smart Cities using V2I Communications

This paper presents a new IoT-centric framework aimed at improving road safety and optimizing traffic management by facilitating real-time communication between traffic signals and smart dashboards within vehicles. Utilizing Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication, the system alerts the imminent traffic signal changes as they near the point of intersections. This advance notification system seeks to decrease sudden stops, lower traffic infractions and boost fuel efficiency by encouraging smoother driving behaviors. To constantly track traffic patterns, this framework utilizes an extensive set of Internet of Things sensors and wireless communication protocols. By minimizing the likelihood of sudden stops and rear-end collisions at junctions, this technology could enhance comprehensive road safety. Using encrypted communication protocols can ensure data accuracy and system reliability while maintaining very fast response times, which are crucial for real-time traffic applications. This groundbreaking idea marks a viable advancement in transforming smart cities' traffic systems, aiding in the creation of smarter, safer, and more efficient transportation. Through quantifiable improvements in traffic flow optimization, congestion reduction, safety metrics and environmental sustainability through lower vehicle emissions and better fuel consumption patterns, the research suggests that deploying such intelligent systems in urban settings is feasible.
