Adaptive Control Method Based on Virtual Synchronous Generator

With the increasing penetration of renewable energy in microgrids, most distributed generation systems require inverters for grid connection and power delivery. However, conventional inverter control algorithms focus solely on rapid response without emulating the inertia characteristics of synchronous generators, leading to significant grid impacts. To address this issue, this paper proposes a coordinated adaptive control strategy for virtual synchronous generator (VSG) with self-adjusting moment of inertia and damping coefficients. The proposed strategy is developed based on an analysis of conventional VSG rotor angular frequency variations and active power oscillation curves. By analyzing the small-signal model of distributed generation systems, selection criteria for adaptive inertia coefficients are established. Finally, simulation comparisons in MATLAB/Simulink validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
