Tiny Quantum, Giant Revolution

In the 20^th century, the triumphant application of quantum theory to understand atoms, chemical bonding, energy bands in solids, and quantum tunneling in nanostructures brought semiconductor technologies and nanotechnology to the world, a period now commonly referred to as the “First Quantum Revolution.” In the ongoing “Second Quantum Revolution” starting in the 21^st century, fundamental properties of quantum theory, such as quantum superposition, quantum entanglement, and quantum interference, are being harnessed to design functional components whose performance surpasses the limitations imposed by classical physics. The gradual maturity of these quantum technologies is poised to dramatically disrupt the current technological industry. Acknowledging the potential impact of quantum technology on humanity and commemorating the 100^th anniversary of matrix mechanics, the United Nations proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ). IYQ is a year-long and worldwide initiative promoting awareness of the importance of quantum science and technology. Now is the perfect time to cultivate quantum literacy.
