A 32-Gb/s Si Micro-Ring Modulator Transmitter with an Integrated Code-Based Temperature Controller

This paper presents a 32-Gb/s silicon micro-ring modulator (MRM) transmitter that consists of the hybridintegrated Si photonic integrated circuit (PIC) and the CMOS electronic integrated circuit (EIC). The EIC contains datageneration and MRM driving circuits as well as a new type of an on-chip MRM temperature controller. The controller generates newly proposed codes used for the MRM calibration with which the MRM temperature for the optical modulation amplitude (OMA) is determined, and maintains this condition. Experimental results validate the transmitter performs well up to 32-Gb/s under varying temperatures.
