Wideband FSS With Rapid Band Edges for Ka-Band Transmission and V-Band Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Applications

A novel frequency selective surface (FSS) with a wide bandpass for Ka-band satellite communication and a wide stopband for V-band electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications is proposed. The proposed FSS is made of a cascaded bandpass layer and a middle bandstop layer. The combined transmission poles and zeros achieve in-band high-selective second-order transmission and out-of-band EMI shielding. Equivalent circuit models (ECMs) are utilized to study the design. The proposed FSS has a 3-dB passband from 28.4 GHz to 39.4 GHz (a relative bandwidth of 32.4%) with two rapid band edges of 4.7% and 2.4%, and an over 20 dB shielding effectiveness from 41.0 GHz to 44.7 GHz (8.6%). The applicable incident angle range of the proposed FSS is within 20°. A prototype is fabricated and measured. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulations. The proposed FSS has a wide in-band high-selective transmission and out-of-band rejection, which is a good candidate for Ka-band transmission and V-band EMI shielding.
