Design of Efficient Power Conditioning Unit for Implantable Medical Devices Operating at 13.56 MHz with an Active Voltage Doubler and Low Dropout Voltage Regulator Using 180nm CMOS Process Technology

This study designed a power conditioning unit (PCU) for Implantable Medical Devices (IMD) at $\mathbf{1 3. 5 6 ~ M H z}$, targeting a minimum efficiency of $70 \%$. The circuits underwent simulation using synopsis to evaluate their compliance with the desired voltage, which involved conducting a series of tests including AC Analysis, DC Analysis, corner simulation, and Monte Carlo simulation. The Monte Carlo analysis specifically assessed the impact of process and temperature variations on the Power Conversion Efficiency (PCE). The circuit designed utilized 180 nm CMOS process technology. The active voltage doubler and the Low Dropout voltage regulator (LDO) circuit achieved efficiencies of $75.23 \%, 78.54 \%$, and $74.97 \%$ (TT, FF, SS) and 90.61%, 90.00%, and 92.12% (TT, FF, SS) respectively. Both circuits met the efficiency requirement, with the LDO circuit outperforming the doubler circuit. The study demonstrates the excellent performance of the power conditioning unit, providing a reliable power supply solution. Incorporating on- chip turn-on delay and turn-off compensation techniques enhances stability and reliability, reducing instability, undesired transients, and voltage spikes. The results contribute to the development of efficient power supply solutions for Implantable Medical devices, advancing medical electronics.
