Enhancing BIM Process Automation and Traceability through ISO 21597-Based Information Containers

As Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes become increasingly complex, the need for traceable and semantically structured information exchange grows more urgent. This study presents a lightweight automation framework that integrates ISO 21597 Information Containers for Linked Document Delivery (ICDD) with IFC-based BIM models to facilitate transparent and standards-aligned documentation workflows. Developed using open-source tools, specifically RDFLib and IfcOpenShell, the Python-based system enables rule-driven linking of model components (e.g., IfcWall, IfcDoor) to authoritative documents such as AIA protocols, which are encoded as RDF triples with globally unique identifiers. The semantic consistency of these relationships is validated via SPARQL queries, and the framework is demonstrated through a design coordination scenario involving architectural and structural disciplines. Guided by Design Science Research principles, the framework was refined and assessed through technical validation and expert feedback. Early results show improvements in lifecycle traceability, reduction in manual effort, and alignment with ISO 19650 practices. The solution’s modular design and adherence to open standards support its compatibility with existing BIM tools and Common Data Environments (CDEs), offering a pragmatic pathway for deploying ISO 21597 in real-world settings.
