Teaching Energy Market Analysis through Real-Time Data Handling Tools

Many engineering students struggle to grasp energy market regulation, operation, and financial concepts. University curricula also provide limited relevant study material, using traditional, less effective methods. This paper aims to address these gaps and obstacles by showcasing the potential of available public data and demonstrating its proper handling to create interactive and informative energy market monthly reports. These reports can be used either as teaching tools to teach students about the essential concepts or as gradable projects to familiarize them with market regulations and assist in recognizing market trends. From an educational standpoint, these dashboards illustrate how real market data can be used to teach students about supply-demand dynamics, marginal pricing, and the operational nuances of interconnected power systems. The reports were developed using Microsoft Excel for data organization and sorting, whilst Microsoft PowerBI offers advanced visualization options and an interactive environment. The methodology was based on data provided by the Hellenic Energy Exchange (HEnEx), publicly available online for download.
