Innovative train integrity detection and positioning system for secondary regional trains

This paper presents the design and implementation of an innovative wireless railway signaling system aimed at ensuring train integrity and precise localization on regional secondary lines in Italy. The system leverages a multi-layered architecture integrating IEEE 802.15.4 and LoRaWAN wireless IoT protocols to enhance reliability while reducing costs. The train integrity monitoring system operates through a network of IEEE 802.15.4 devices distributed along the wagons. These devices continuously exchange signals to verify the physical continuity of the train in real-time. If a break in communication is detected, an immediate alert is triggered, enabling prompt intervention. A distributed positioning system is employed for train localization. The train determines its position by interacting with fixed IEEE 802.15.4 reference nodes installed at regular intervals along the railway track. By measuring the signals received from these nodes, the train can accurately compute its location without relying on GPS, which may be ineffective in tunnels or remote areas. The collected train integrity and position data are transmitted to the railway control center via a communication backbone that integrates IEEE 802.15.4 with LoRaWAN. The trackside poles act as relay nodes, forwarding information to LoRaWAN concentrators, ensuring seamless data delivery for centralized monitoring and decision-making. By combining real-time train integrity verification with a GPS-independent localization approach, this system enhances operational safety and efficiency on secondary railway lines, offering a robust alternative to conventional signaling solutions.
