iObserver: An IoT-Enabled Virtual Telepresence Robot for Hazardous Environment Exploration

In hazardous environments where direct human intervention poses significant risks, virtual telepresence robotics offers a transformative solution by enabling remote exploration and control. This paper presents an innovative virtual telepresence robotic system that integrates Virtual Reality (VR), 360° cameras, and a network of IoT-enabled environmental sensors to enhance situational awareness and remote operation capabilities. The proposed system allows users to immerse themselves in a panoramic view of the remote environment in real-time through a VR headset, providing an intuitive and realistic experience. The robotic platform is equipped with multiple interconnected sensors, forming an IoT framework, for real-time monitoring of critical environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, and air quality. This IoT integration enables seamless data collection, transmission, and analysis, supporting informed decision-making in dangerous settings. Additionally, a hand-controlled navigation system allows users to precisely maneuver the robot in various directions, facilitating seamless remote control. By combining VR technology, 360° vision, IoT-driven sensing, and intelligent control, this work advances the field of telepresence robotics, offering a cost-effective and efficient solution for applications in disaster response, industrial inspections, and hazardous environment exploration.
