Monitoring the electromagnetic environment for general public in tourist destinations: The case study of Platanias, Chania, Crete, Greece

The rapid growth in the use of wireless technologies, along with over-tourism in many parts of the Greek islands, has raised public concerns about the elevated exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. In this work, to evaluate the change of the electromagnetic radiation levels in the local environment, we have used collected data from a constant monitoring sensor, belonging to the National Observatory of Electromagnetic Fields in Greece and located in a highly touristic area of Chania in the island of Crete, called Platanias. The recorded data are presented for the last decade as well as for a 12-month period. The highest observed electric field strength value was 1.274 V/m, remaining in compliance with the enforced regulatory limits.
