3DGV: 3D Gaussian Splatting-Based Holographic Video Streaming over Wireless Networks

The Three-Dimensional Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) method enables real-time, high-quality rendering for holographic videos, paving the way for the realization of holographic communication in the near future. However, 3DGS-based content delivery demands extremely high network bandwidth currently. In this paper, we proposed a novel adaptive 3DGS-based holographic Video streaming scheme with efficient inter-frame compression over wireless networks, named 3DGV, to accelerate the generation for high-quality 3DGS-based videos and balance the wireless bandwidth resource requirement and users’ Quality of Experience (QoE) for advancing holographic communication, making it more accessible and seamless for users. The experimental results over the 5G scenario dataset demonstrate that our proposed 3DGV significantly reduces bandwidth consumption by more than 48.4% and improves QoE by more than 12.6% compared to two baseline algorithms for holographic video streaming.
