QUIC-LR: A Packet-Loss-Awareness Adaptive Retransmission Strategy in QUIC

Traditional transport protocols demonstrate limited performance in bandwidth-constrained, high-loss networks. QUIC protocol addresses this by adopting UDP transport with fast connection setup, built-in encryption, and forward error correction (FEC). Although FEC’s parity data enables loss recovery without retransmission, the incorrect loss detection leads to unnecessary retransmissions. We propose QUIC-LR, an adaptive retransmission strategy that intelligently utilizes residual FEC parity packets for precise loss rate estimation while dynamically adjusting both time and packet thresholds for retransmission. Experimental results across heterogeneous networks (WLAN/4G/5G/satellite) validate that QUIC-LR reduces transmission completion time compared to standard QUIC, with particularly notable improvements in high packet loss scenarios.
