A New Composite Probe With the Features of High Sensitivity and Multicomponents

Herein, a new composite probe with the features of high sensitivity and multicomponents is showcased. A traditional U-shaped loop with dual ports is utilized to simultaneously test electric- and magnetic-field components. However, the U-shaped loop has an obvious drawback: the electric-field sensitivity is much lower than the magnetic-field sensitivity. A pair of U-shaped strips is arranged at both sides of the U-shaped loop to sense more electric-field couplings in the designed probe. Moreover, some via fences are used to suppress undesired parallel-plate modes. The features and characteristics of the probe were verified using simulations on a model built on a four-layer PCB, and characterized using a coplanar waveguide transmission line. Simulated results indicate that the electric-field sensitivity of the proposed probe is nearly 4 dB higher than that of the single-loop probe. Besides, measured results reveal that the electric-field sensitivity of the probe is greater than −40 dB for 2.2–10 GHz frequency, whereas the magnetic-field sensitivity is greater than −50 dB for 2.0–10 GHz frequency. Therefore, by combining the U-shaped loop and U-shaped strips connected via, the proposed probe could simultaneously test electromagnetic fields (E and H) and had a higher detection sensitivity.
