Simulation System for Surviving Natural Disasters Through Virtual Reality (VR)

Natural disasters pose significant challenges to society, individuals, the economy, and the environment, particularly in geographically and geologically vulnerable countries like Japan, the Philippines, and India. While nations such as Japan have developed advanced disaster response systems, including real-time social media communication and mitigation strategies, language barriers and limited disaster experiences hinder awareness and preparedness in other regions.This study aims to bridge these gaps by developing a virtual reality (VR) simulation system designed to enhance learning and disaster preparedness. The system provides an immersive environment that simulates natural disaster scenarios, enabling users to understand and practice survival strategies. In this research, the simulation specifically covers earthquake scenarios, allowing users to experience and respond to various earthquake-related situations. Initial testing was conducted with elementary school students in a remote area of Chiang Rai Province, Thailand, where disaster risk is low. The study involved experimental trials and data collection through observation, knowledge assessment, and evaluation of the system's effectiveness. Insights from this study will guide the design of future VR-based disaster education programs tailored to diverse age groups and regional contexts.
