Time-Domain Modeling of IPMSM Considering Magnet Eddy Current Reaction Effect and Cross Coupling

In interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs), accurately predicting the armature currents under PWM voltage supply is challenging, particularly for the harmonic components, due to a number of issues including magnetic saturation, spatial harmonics, cross coupling, and magnet eddy current reaction. In this paper, an improved time-domain model of the IPMSM with rotor virtual short-circuit windings is proposed to incorporate all these relevant effects, especially the magnet eddy current reaction effect and cross coupling in both stator windings and rotor virtual windings. The parameters of the rotor virtual windings can be identified through a standstill time-domain response (SSTR) test using the finite element (FE) method. FE simulation results and experiments of a 2.4 kW, 12krpm 9-slot 6-pole IPMSM confirm that the proposed time-domain model has rather high accuracy in armature current prediction. The simulations of electromagnetic performance and temperature field further demonstrate that the more accurate prediction of armature currents provided by the proposed model result in a more accurate evaluation of electromagnetic performance and temperature rise for the IPMSM.
