Improving the Capacity of LR-FHSS Networks with Robust Successive Interference Cancellation

Long Range-Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (LR-FHSS) is a new wireless modulation technique that has attracted a considerable amount of attention due to its high network capacity. In this paper, we propose a Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) method for LR-FHSS that is capable of reconstructing the signal waveform effectively under collision. We test the SIC method with simulations driven by real-world packet traces and the results show that it roughly doubles the network capacity comparing to the existing SIC method. We also develop a simple analytical bound for the capacity of LR-FHSS networks. The results show that the network capacity achieved by our receiver is within 67% or 62% of the bound depending on the data rate, which suggests that our receiver is approaching the limit of LR-FHSS networks because the analytical bound is based on certain idealist assumptions.
