Implementation of Data Communication System Using HDLC Protocol with CRC-16 Based Error Detection on a Transceiver Platform

Digital data transmission over analog channels still faces challenges in terms of efficiency and reliability. This research presents the implementation of a data communication system using the High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) protocol with CRC-16 error detection, integrated on a Raspberry Pi transceiver platform and communicating via a Handy Talkie (HT) device. The system utilizes Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulation and ALSA-based signal processing to support the transmission of text and grayscale data. Experimental evaluations were conducted across various data rates, file sizes, and communication distance scenarios. The results indicate that the system can accurately transmit data at an optimal data rate of ${3 0 0 - 4 0 0}$ bps for short distances and 150-200 bps for distances up to 200 m, while weaknesses were detected with very small data sizes and large images. Suggestions for future system development include the implementation of advanced error correction techniques and optimization of bit efficiency. This research affirms the potential of using HDLC and CRC-16 as a foundation for efficient and economical digital data communication over analog channels and offers a practical approach for field communication scenarios.
