A Circularly Polarized Magneto-electric Dipole with Wide Bandwidth Antenna for 5G Applications

A novel compact and wideband magneto-electric (ME) dipole structure with circular polarization(CP) is introduced, targeting applications in millimeter wave (mmWave) and satellite communication systems. The antenna features a microstrip-fed configuration that excites co-phased electric dipoles via a slot-loaded patch and vertical magnetic dipoles to generate linear polarization (LP). Circular polarization is realized through two key design strategies: 1) diagonally oriented electric dipoles connected to an intermediate dielectric layer via shorting posts to form a rotational current path, and 2) an F-shaped metallic strip with localized truncation to optimize surface current distribution and enhance the axial ratio (AR). Experimental results verify an impedance bandwidth of 51.2% spanning 24.00 to 40.55 GHz, alongside a 3-dB AR bandwidth of 52.9% covering 26.73 to 46.00 GHz. The antenna attains a peak gain of 8.7 dBi while maintaining cross-polarization levels below -15 dB throughout the operating frequency range. Thanks to its broad bandwidth, elevated gain, and compact design, the proposed antenna is highly suitable for 5G NR bands (n258/n260) and low earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems that demand dual-mode circular polarization functionality.
