H-Plane Coupling Reduction of a MIMO Array by Utilizing Electric and Magnetic Coupling Resonance

An H-plane decoupling method utilizing electric and magnetic resonance to reduce the mutual coupling between MIMO antenna elements is proposed and analyzed herein. A pair of strips is printed in the orthogonal direction to the dipole antenna. The capacitance between the dipole antennas and the strips results in an electric coupling between the original antenna elements. Meanwhile, the original antenna has an inherent magnetic coupling. Thus, an electric and magnetic coupling resonance is formed between the introduced electric coupling and the inherent magnetic coupling, which is equivalent to an open circuit, effectively reducing the mutual coupling between the dipole antenna elements. Simulation results indicate that the lowest coupling of the dipole MIMO antenna can be reduced to -48 dB within the operational band of 4.6-5.65 GHz. These results suggest that this method has the potential to be used for mutual decoupling for massive MIMO dipole antennas.
