An Electrically Small Dual-Band VHF Antenna for CubeSat Applications

A novel dual-band VHF antenna for CubeSat applications is proposed. The structure is integrated with the satellite body to eliminate the need for complex deployment mechanisms. Its design performed with the aid of characteristic modes theory (CMT) to ensure appropriate coupling of radiator components to the satellite body. The radiator is implemented in the form of a metal plate at the base of the CubeSat enhanced using a meander-line located at its side. It operates at 113 MHz and 294 MHz frequencies. The proposed geometry is characterized by small electrical dimensions of less than 0.12λ—at the lower operating frequency—which is crucial for its reliable integration with space-constrained CubeSat platforms.
