SITRUS: Simulation and Analysis of Irregular Tessellated Wireless Sensor Networks Using Cooja

Efficient sensor deployment in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) remains challenging in irregular environments due to the need for robust k-coverage and energy efficiency. This paper introduces SITRUS (Simulation of Irregular Tessellation in Realistic Unstructured Sensor Networks), a comprehensive simulation and analytical framework that leverages irregular tessellation for optimized node placement. A closed form density model estimates the minimal sensor count based on coverage degree, sensing range, and granularity. A max-min optimization strategy ensures uniform distribution within each tile, minimizing redundancy. The proposed design is validated through realistic simulations in Contiki-NG and Cooja using heterogeneous Sky and Z1 motes under varying node mobility and densities. Simulation results show up to 37.5% lower sensor density, 34.6% less control overhead, and over 40% increase in network lifetime compared to baseline methods. SITRUS provides a scalable, energy-aware deployment solution for real-world modern WSNs operating in complex and dynamic environments.
