Underwater Image Enhancement Using Color Balancing and Fusion: A Case Study on Dwaraka

Underwater Archaeology and underwater photography for archaeologically and culture heritage sites such as Dwaraka are not only difficult for various reasons, such as visibility issues but also high color distortion. This research aims and proposes a new and more advanced method for enhancing images underwater through the utilization of histogram balancing techniques together with white balancing techniques. In essence, the model's implementation looks to recreate the accurate colors and shapes depicted in the scene underwater. The improvements allow for a clear underwater vision of the site, while also demonstrating improvement in regard to color contrast, balance and quality. This implies that this method allows for a clearer and more vivid reality of visually documenting maritime archaeological underwater sites. However, the algorithm has specific use cases as it doesn't allow for a live adaptation, instead, users can take photographs underwater and then the algorithm can process the image. We can also quantify the results with the help of a mathematical concept called SNR or Signal to Noise ratio.
