Comparative Study of Harmonic Mitigation Techniques: Least Squares, Kalman Filter, and Adaptive Methods

Nowadays, alternating current (AC) is widely used to transmit electricity over large distances. But using AC also comes with the harmonics present in the power signals. The presence of harmonics in the electrical signals decreases their quality and also affects the reliability and efficiency of the system. Mitigating the harmonics present in the signals is crucial for the overall improvement in the performance and lifespan of the electrical appliances. Traditional practices used for harmonic mitigation are often overpriced and tend to have low accuracy while doing real-time signal processing. This work addresses these challenges by using comparatively advanced methods like Least Square Estimation (LSE), Recursive Least Square Estimation (RLSE), Total Least Square Estimation (TLSE), Kalman Filter and Adaptive Notch Filter (ANF). After performing signal processing using these methods on a generated signal with harmonics, the results are compared using the THD of the processed signal to decide the best method for harmonic mitigation.
