VSC-HVDC Power Module with Active Energy Release Function

When large-scale renewable energy is transmitted in islanded mode via VSC-HVDC systems, there is a risk of power surplus. Conventional solutions typically rely on AC or DC energy dissipation devices to absorb the instantaneous surplus power. However, these approaches often suffer from complex circuit structures, high system costs, and difficult installation processes. This paper proposes an VSC-HVDC Power Module with Active Energy Release Function based on press-pack IGBT technology, leveraging the topological characteristics of both converter valve power modules and energy dissipation device modules. First, the operating principle of the VSC-HVDC valve power module is introduced. On this basis, a power module topology incorporating an energy dissipation branch is proposed, and its operating mechanism is analyzed. A detailed structural design of the proposed solution is then presented. Electromagnetic and thermal simulations are conducted based on the structural model to assess the feasibility of the solution. Finally, a valve segment test platform circuit is designed for experimental verification. The test results confirm the feasibility of the proposed approach, indicating that it is ready for implementation in VSC-HVDC engineering applications.
