Optimization and Evaluation of Coordinated Operation Strategy for Hybrid Pumped Storage Power Plant

The hybrid pumped hydro storage plant (HPHSP) can effectively enhance system peak-shaving capacity by integrating conventional hydropower units with pumped storage facilities. However, existing research lacks systematic modeling of the internal coordination mechanisms between conventional and pumped units in HPHSPs. Meanwhile, the quantitative evaluation methods for the operational strategy of HPHSP remains limited. To solve this problem, this paper first establishes a coordinated operation model for the HPHSP that considers both fixed-speed and variable-speed pumped storage hydro units. Six optimization strategies are designed under scenarios that either allow or prohibit simultaneous pumping and generating operations, while considering unit operation costs and water resource utilization efficiency. Then, a multi-criteria assessment framework is proposed to evaluate operational strategy performance of the HPHSP, which combines the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), criteria importance through intercriteria correlation (CRITIC), and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The six optimization strategies are tested on a real-life system, and the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed evaluation framework can effectively quantify benefits of coordinated operation strategies, providing a valuable reference for the design and evaluation of operational strategies in the HPHSP.
