Research on Optimizing Reactive Power Support Capability of Variable-Speed Pumped Storage Units

This paper focuses on the reactive power support issue during low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) in variable-speed pumped storage units. Building upon the relevant standards for wind turbine reactive power support, an optimized reactive power support strategy is proposed. This strategy maximizes the unit's reactive current output capability during LVRT by fully utilizing the capacity limits of the rotor-side converter (RSC). Meanwhile, it maintains certain active current output under specific operating conditions, facilitating rapid active power recovery after fault clearance. To validate the proposed control strategy, a 300MW unit simulation model was developed on the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) platform. The simulation results indicate that the control strategy proposed in this paper can improve the reactive current support capacity by about 10% compared with the traditional control in the LVRT process, and can maintain a certain active output, which has certain economyThe simulation results confirm the feasibility of the control approach.
