Standardization View: Cross-Domain Semantic Communications Enabled Real-Time Autonomous Driving

The efficient data transmission advantage of semantic communication (SemCom) technology supports for opening up a new paradigm of autonomous driving. However, in view of the mobility of autonomous driving vehicles (ADVs), the cross-domain SemCom is still a bottleneck for real-time autonomous driving. In this article, we summarize the standardization of SemCom technology. Then, we present the key issues encountered by SemCom enabled autonomous driving. In particular, an innovative cross-domain SemCom procedure, which includes intra-domain procedure and inter-domain procedure, is proposed to empower real-time autonomous driving. For intra-domain procedure, the important underlying information of ADVs is extracted to satisfy real-time autonomous driving tasks under limited communication resource. For inter-domain procedure, semantic models are transferred between new base stations (BSs) and ADVs to guarantee the semantic communication quality. Finally, the future directions of SemCom in autonomous driving are presented.
